General Tournament Rules

Official FIDE regulations governing chess competitions and tournaments

Basic Tournament Regulations

These fundamental rules apply to all FIDE-rated chess tournaments:

  • All games must be played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess
  • Players must be registered with their national federation to participate
  • Tournament announcements must specify time controls, tiebreak systems, and prize distribution
  • The chief arbiter's decisions are final in all matters relating to chess rules

Player Responsibilities

Before the Game
  • Arrive at the tournament venue at least 30 minutes before the round
  • Register with the arbiter and confirm pairing
  • Ensure mobile phones and electronic devices are completely switched off
During the Game
  • Record all moves clearly on the scoresheet (except in blitz)
  • Press the clock with the same hand used to move the piece
  • Only speak to say "I adjust" when centering a piece
  • Never leave the playing area without arbiter's permission
After the Game
  • Sign both scoresheets to confirm the result
  • Report immediately to the arbiter if there's any dispute
  • Leave the playing area quietly to avoid disturbing other games

Tournament Systems

Swiss System

The most common system for large tournaments:

  • Players are paired against others with similar scores
  • No player faces the same opponent twice
  • Color alternation is maintained as much as possible
  • Common tiebreaks: Buchholz, Sonneborn-Berger, Direct Encounter

Round Robin

Used for small groups where everyone plays everyone:

  • Players receive a color sequence at the start
  • Perfect color balance is maintained
  • Common in candidate matches and small invitationals

Knockout System

Used in championship matches and some team events:

  • Matches typically consist of 2 games (home and away)
  • Tiebreaks include rapid, blitz, and Armageddon games
  • Players are eliminated after losing a match

Time Controls

Standard FIDE time control categories:

Classical Chess
  • Minimum 60 minutes per player for entire game
  • Common controls: 90+30, 120+30 (minutes + increment)
  • Scoresheets required for all moves
Rapid Chess
  • 10-60 minutes per player
  • Common controls: 15+10, 25+10
  • Scoresheets optional (players may record last moves when under 5 minutes)
Blitz Chess
  • 3-10 minutes per player
  • Common controls: 3+2, 5+0
  • No scoresheets required
  • Illegal move claims must be made before next move is made

Common Tournament Scenarios

Late Arrival

Rule: Zero tolerance policy in many tournaments means arriving late forfeits the game. Standard tolerance is usually 30 minutes for classical, 10 for rapid, and 0 for blitz.

Color Imbalance

Rule: Players should receive equal colors (+1/-1 max). In Swiss systems, computers adjust pairings to maintain balance. In round robins, color sequences are predetermined.

Draw Offers

Rule: Players may offer a draw after making a move but before pressing clock. Cannot be conditional ("if you take my pawn..."). Cannot be repeated without intervening moves.
