How FIDE Rating Calculation Works

The FIDE rating system uses the Elo rating system to calculate rating changes after each game. The formula is:

New Rating = Current Rating + K × (Actual Score - Expected Score)

Where:

  • K-factor determines how much your rating can change (10-40)
  • Expected Score is calculated based on rating difference
  • Actual Score is 1 for win, 0.5 for draw, 0 for loss

About K-Factors

The K-factor determines how much your rating can change from a single game or tournament. FIDE uses these K-factor values:

K=40

  • For new players until they complete 30 games
  • Also for players under 18 with rating below 2300
  • Maximum volatility
  • Rapid rating changes

K=30

  • For junior players (under 18)
  • Until they reach 2300 rating
  • Moderate volatility
  • Balances learning with stability

K=20

  • For players below 2400 rating
  • Standard for most adult players
  • Moderate stability
  • Gradual rating changes

K=15

  • For players who reach 2400 rating
  • Even if they drop below later
  • High stability
  • Small rating adjustments

K=10

  • For established players
  • Only for players above 2400 with 30+ games
  • Maximum stability
  • Very small rating changes

At SPM Chess Academy, we help players understand their rating progression and set realistic goals based on their K-factor and current level.
